Buying a used Toyota forklift is a good investment, allowing you to save even half the cost of purchasing a new one. Considering that the total engine resource in Toyota forklifts of series 8 is at least 30,000 machine hours before a gearbox and/or engine overhaul, is it a good idea to buy a used forklift with a mileage of up to 10,000 machine hours? Yes, but only if it is in good technical condition.

What to pay attention to when buying a forklift?

Check the year of production: Forklifts have a metal plate on the front panel, which states the year of production. The year of production of the forklift is also located at the base of the seatbelt. The information on the plate and on the belt should match.

Number of hours worked: How to understand that the number of engine hours corresponds to reality?

Appearance of the forklift: Condition of the steering wheel, handles for changing direction, handles for controlling hydraulic functions – check if they are scratched.

Check under the hood: Oil level in the engine and its condition (presence of emulsions), levels of hydraulic and cooling fluids, air filter – presence of dirt and contaminants, appearance of the engine

Wheels: In pneumatic wheels, the tread should be visible, and in superelastic wheels, wear must not exceed the wear indicator (a solid line drawn on the side of the wheel).

Forklift carriage: Due to continuous movement up and down, the bearings in the fork carriage wear out; you can stand upright on the forks and try to rock the forklift left and right to check if the bearings are okay.

Chains and hoses on the mast: Place a metal ruler against the chain and check the amount of deviation from a straight line. A large deviation indicates high mileage of the vehicle, such chains and hoses should be replaced immediately.

Play in the steering axle: Start the forklift and sharply turn the steering wheel, rotating the wheels. Due to intensive use, the pins and shackles on the wheels may start to loosen and rattle, and they should be replaced.

Start the forklift: This should be done several times to check the starter's operation. Then listen to see if the engine runs smoothly, unscrew the oil filler cap and check if exhaust gases are escaping from it.

Check the work lights: It is necessary to check the operation of the headlights, reverse lights, and turn signals.

Repairing the engine, gearbox, or mast is very expensive. Buying a "cheap" forklift that requires repairs may be more expensive than purchasing a functioning forklift in good technical condition or a new one.
